Where a Corcovado stopover fits on the map

BaliBala sits on the coastal road between Quepos and Dominical, at Playa Matapalo in the district of Savegre, Puntarenas. There is more than one Matapalo in the country, so check the map link before you set your navigation. It is not in a town, and the beach is just steps from the property.

That position matters if you are travelling between San José and the south of the country. BaliBala makes a natural stop on that route, in either direction: a pause on the drive down, or the place you come back up to once Corcovado is done.

A car is recommended. Public transport is not available, and the national parks are worth the drive. The coastal road past Playa Matapalo has one lane in each direction, so give the journey the time it needs.

The day before, and the day after

The day before, keep it light: arrive and be welcomed personally by Linda or Flory, walk down to Playa Matapalo, and let the jungle introduce itself from a hammock or the pool. Cook in your open-air kitchen and fall asleep to the waves.

The day after, keep it still. Playa Matapalo is a long, largely empty stretch of Pacific sand with plenty of natural shade, and the hosts provide beach towels and chairs. The surf is open Pacific and can be strong, so it is a beach for walking, playing on the sand and supervised paddling, with swimming judged day by day. Two restaurants and a small supermarket are a short walk away.

If you have another park day in you, Manuel Antonio National Park is about a 50-minute drive north along the coastal road, a comfortable morning trip. Go early, take water, and book a guide at the entrance if you want the wildlife pointed out.

Which stay to choose for the trip

There are four private stays in shared gardens, steps from the beach. The No-Footprint House, from the internationally awarded No Footprint House series by A-01, sleeps 4 across two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, with a private pool inside a fully fenced garden. Its own entrance, own gate and private parking suit a road trip well.

The three safari tents each sleep 5 in two lockable bedrooms, with open-air hot-water showers and a fully equipped kitchen. Two have a deep plunge pool built into the deck; the Hideaway has no pool and is the quietest of the three, a good fit for the night after a long day.

One rule to know before you book: children under 10 are not permitted in the two pool tents, because their plunge pools are deep and unfenced. Families with younger children should look at the No-Footprint House, with its fenced garden, or the Safari Tent Hideaway. Always confirm current house rules on Airbnb before booking.

There is no self check-in. You will be personally welcomed by Linda or Flory, our local host, so let the hosts know if a Corcovado day means an early start or a late return.
