Playa Matapalo is a quiet base for it: you leave the jungle garden in the morning, drive south along the coastal road, and come back to Playa Matapalo, a few steps from your door, with the evening free.

Where Nauyaca Waterfalls are, from BaliBala
The falls are inland from Dominical, up in the hills that rise behind the surf town. From Playa Matapalo, Dominical is a short drive south along the coastal road, so the day naturally runs in one direction: down the coast, up into the hills, and back the same way.
Ask the hosts how long to allow for the drive; they know the road and the week's conditions. Our sample itineraries give Nauyaca a morning, leaving the afternoon for Dominical or for doing very little at all.
How you reach the falls once you leave the road, and the entry arrangements, change from season to season. Check current details with the hosts or the operator when you book; the hosts are happy to connect you with trusted local providers.
How the day usually runs
Our seven-night itinerary pairs the falls with the surf town: Nauyaca Waterfalls in the hills in the morning, then down into Dominical for the afternoon. Dominical is the area's surf hub, a laid-back place of board racks, sodas, and cafés, with a well-known beach break. Browse, eat, and swim where conditions suit.
Dinner can be in Dominical or back at BaliBala. If you would rather keep the day simpler, the five-night itinerary treats Nauyaca as a morning on its own, followed by a slow recovery: shade, snacks, and a swim.
The five-night itinerary offers two alternatives for that same morning: a surf lesson on a nearby break, or horseback riding along beach and jungle trails. Both can be arranged with the hosts' help through local providers.
Getting there, and getting back
A car is recommended: public transport is not available and the national parks are worth the drive. The coastal road past Playa Matapalo has one lane in each direction, and Dominical lies south along it.
If you would rather not drive, day-trip transfers can be arranged ahead through the hosts' local contacts. Tell them when you are thinking of going and they will suggest what is practical that week.

Evening at Playa Matapalo
The return is part of the appeal. You drive back north to a long, largely empty stretch of Pacific sand a few steps from your door. Stay for the sunset if you are home for it; the hosts call it Costa Rica's best. The surf is open ocean, strong at times, so treat the beach as a place for walking and watching rather than confident swimming, and judge the water day by day.
Back in the garden, monkeys and macaws are frequently seen from the decks, and sloths make slower appearances. Cook in your open-air kitchen, then fall asleep to the waves.
Which stay to choose for a Nauyaca day
All four stays share the same gardens and the same short walk to the beach, so any of them works as a base. The two Safari Tents with Pool each sleep five and give you a deep plunge pool built into the deck for the afternoon after the hills. The Safari Tent Hideaway is the same tent without a pool, the quietest of the three.
The No-Footprint House sleeps four behind its own gate, with a private pool inside a fully fenced garden and its own private parking, which is convenient on a day-trip morning.
Travelling with children: children under 10 are not permitted in the two pool tents, because the pool is deep and unfenced. Families with younger children should choose the No-Footprint House or the Hideaway. Always confirm current house rules on Airbnb before booking.
