Private Beach Villas Near Dominical
Dominical is the surf town. BaliBala is where you sleep afterwards: four private stays set in shared jungle gardens at Playa Matapalo, a short drive north along the coastal road, with the beach steps away and the waves audible from your bed.
If you are searching for private beach villas near Dominical, this is what we mean by private. An award-winning house behind its own gate, and three luxury safari tents, each in its own clearing. Three of the four have a pool of their own.

Between Dominical and Manuel Antonio, on a beach most people miss
BaliBala sits at Playa Matapalo, in the district of Savegre, Puntarenas, on Costa Rica's southern Pacific coast. There is more than one Matapalo in the country, so it is worth checking the map before you set your navigation: ours is the one on the coastal road between Quepos and Dominical.
It is not in a town, and that is its gift. Dominical and Uvita lie to the south, Quepos and Manuel Antonio to the north, and the beach is steps from the gardens. Two restaurants and a small supermarket are within walking distance.
A car is recommended: public transport is not available, and the national parks are worth the drive.

Private beach villas near Dominical, in the ways that matter
Four stays share the gardens, and each is fully private. The No-Footprint House is a teak-built home from the No Footprint House series by architecture studio A-01, recognised internationally, including a public-vote win at the Dezeen Awards and an International Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum. It has its own entrance, its own gate separate from the safari tents, and private parking. Its pool sits inside a fully fenced garden, and two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, sleep up to four.
The three safari tents were shipped from South Africa and built from four layers of canvas, chosen for strength, shade, and comfort in a tropical setting. Each has two lockable bedrooms, a king bed, a queen and a high twin, a fully equipped kitchen, and two open-air hot-water showers under the canopy. Each sleeps five in its own private garden. Two have a deep plunge pool built into the deck; the Hideaway has no pool, and is the quietest of the three.
The property is fenced, with on-site security, and arrival is always personal: you will be welcomed by Linda or Flory, our local host.

Steps from the sand, not on it
A word on the phrase beach villa. BaliBala is not built on the sand. The stays sit in jungle a few steps back from the sea, and the beach is a short walk through the trees. What you get is shade, birdsong, and the sound of the waves carrying into the house or tent. As Franziska put it in her Airbnb review: "Tent super close to the beach, you can hear the waves."
Playa Matapalo is an endless, largely empty stretch of Pacific sand with plenty of natural shade, and guests regularly report having it almost to themselves. Beach towels and chairs are provided.
The surf is open Pacific: strong at times, spectacular at sunset. It is a beach for walking, playing on the sand, and supervised paddling rather than confident swimming, and conditions change day to day.

Dominical by day, quiet by night
Dominical is the area's surf hub, a laid-back town of board racks, sodas, and cafés with a well-known beach break. It is a short drive south along the coastal road: good for a morning surf lesson, an afternoon of browsing, and grocery runs. Nauyaca Waterfalls are in the hills inland from Dominical.
Further south, Uvita is the gateway to Marino Ballena National Park and the Whale's Tail sandbar, walkable at low tide. Depending on tide, season, and daily conditions, some spots around Uvita and Bahía Ballena can offer more sheltered swimming than the open coast; the hosts can point you to current options. In season, whale-watching tours run from here.
North, Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio is about a 50-minute drive, a comfortable morning trip. Back at BaliBala, monkeys and macaws are frequently seen from the decks, and sloths make slower appearances.
Surf lessons, horseback riding, ziplining, kayaking, transport, and restaurant tables can be arranged through trusted local providers, so your stay helps support the community around Playa Matapalo.

Choosing between the house and the tents
Couples and friends can choose on personality: the house for architecture and a fenced pool, the pool tents for a plunge pool built into the deck, the Hideaway for garden on every side and the deepest quiet. Three tents in total, so groups can ask about booking more than one.
Travelling with children changes the answer. Children under 10 are not permitted in the two pool tents: the pool is deep and unfenced. Families with younger children should look at the No-Footprint House, whose pool sits inside a fully fenced garden, or the Safari Tent Hideaway, which has no pool. Always confirm current house rules on Airbnb before booking.
Wherever you stay, BaliBala sits in open jungle and wildlife moves through the property. None of the accommodations are fully childproof environments, so adults need to supervise children. Sound travels easily in open-air buildings, and all guests are asked to help keep the place peaceful.

See this stayIs BaliBala actually on the beach?
No, and we would rather say so. The stays sit in jungle a few steps back from the sea; the beach is a short walk through the trees, and the waves are audible from the house and the tents.
How far is Dominical from BaliBala?
A short drive south along the coastal road, which has one lane in each direction. A car is recommended, as public transport is not available.
Can we swim at Playa Matapalo?
Judge it day by day. The surf is open Pacific and can be strong, so the beach suits walking, playing on the sand, and supervised paddling more than confident swimming. Ask the hosts about more sheltered spots around Uvita and Bahía Ballena, which depend on tide, season, and daily conditions.
Which stays accept children under 10?
The No-Footprint House and the Safari Tent Hideaway. The two pool tents do not accept children under 10, because their plunge pools are deep and unfenced. Always confirm current house rules on Airbnb before booking.
How do we book?
Every stay is booked through its own Airbnb listing; this site takes no payments. If you are unsure which stay fits, message the hosts and they will reply with honest advice.
