The long stay beach villa guide: slow weeks at Playa Matapalo
A long stay beach villa in Costa Rica asks a different question of a place than a weekend does. Not whether the pool is pretty, but whether the kitchen can feed you for a fortnight, whether the wifi holds, and whether you will still love the sound of the waves on night twelve.
BaliBala is four private stays in shared jungle gardens at Playa Matapalo, Savegre, Puntarenas: one award-winning house and three luxury safari tents, each with two bedrooms and a fully equipped kitchen, all a short walk from the beach. This guide explains how the place works when you settle in for longer, and which stay to choose.

What a long stay at BaliBala looks like
The property sits in open jungle a few steps back from the sea. Monkeys cross the property daily, macaws are frequently seen from the decks, and sloths make slower appearances. Over a longer stay the wildlife stops being an event and becomes the neighbourhood.
Every stay has its own kitchen, so most days do not need to start with a plan. Two restaurants and a small supermarket sit within walking distance for the basics, and Dominical, a short drive south, is where guests go for a fuller grocery run and a change of scene. A car is recommended: public transport is not available, and the national parks are worth the drive.
The days sort themselves into two speeds: mornings when the plan is a hammock, a pool, and the sound of waves, and days out to Manuel Antonio, Uvita, or the Nauyaca waterfalls inland from Dominical. A longer stay lets you have both.

Kitchens, wifi, and what is deliberately absent
Each stay has a fully equipped kitchen with stove, oven, and microwave, and the tents add an outdoor kitchen and outdoor dining area. All four stays list wifi, and every stay has a safe. In the tents, both bedrooms lock, and each has a ceiling fan, mosquito net, and its own sink. In the house, each bedroom has its own bathroom.
It is only fair to say what is not here. There is no TV, no washer-dryer, and no air-conditioning. The design relies on ceiling fans, shade, and ocean air, and the tents' four layers of canvas were chosen for exactly this climate. One guest, Raquel, put it this way in her review: "Fully equipped, we felt at home, but disconnected from our screens."
At the No-Footprint House, housekeeping is available at extra cost. Breakfast can be arranged at any stay if you ask ahead, and the hosts are happy to connect you with trusted local providers for everything beyond it.

Which stay suits a longer visit
The No-Footprint House sleeps four across two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. It has a private pool, open all year, inside a fully fenced garden, plus its own entrance, its own gate, and private parking, so it stays entirely self-contained. It belongs to the internationally awarded No Footprint House series by architecture studio A-01.
The three safari tents each sleep five: a king bed in the main bedroom, a queen and a high twin in the second. Two have a deep plunge pool built into the deck. The Hideaway has no pool and is the quietest of the three, the one to pick when the ideal afternoon is a hammock, a book, and birdsong. For couples and friends settling in for weeks, any of the four works.

Families and children on a longer stay
Children under 10 are not permitted in the two pool tents: the pool is deep and unfenced. Families with younger children should look at the No-Footprint House, whose pool sits within a fully fenced garden, or the Safari Tent Hideaway, which has no pool at all. Always confirm current house rules on Airbnb before booking.
BaliBala sits in open jungle and none of the accommodations are fully childproof environments, so adults need to supervise children. Playa Matapalo is open Pacific and its surf can be strong: it is a beach for walking, playing on the sand, and supervised paddling rather than confident swimming, and conditions change day to day. The hosts can point families towards spots around Uvita and Bahía Ballena that can be more sheltered, depending on tide, season, and daily conditions.

Groups, and combining stays
The tents sit in the same gardens, each fully private, and the house sits behind its own gate. Seen from the air, nothing is far from anything. For multi-family trips or a group of friends, the hosts' advice is simple: there are three tents in total, ask about booking more than one.
Together the four stays sleep nineteen, four in the house and five in each tent. Sound carries easily in open-air buildings, so all guests, families included, are asked to help keep the place peaceful.

How to arrange a long stay
Reservations run through Airbnb, and each stay page links straight to its listing. This site shows no prices or availability, and there are no published long-stay terms, so the honest route is to message the hosts with who is coming and roughly when. Linda, an Airbnb Superhost, runs BaliBala personally and replies with advice on which stay fits, and on arrival you will be personally welcomed by Linda or Flory, the local host.
